What Ted Lasso Got Wrong

Ted Lasso is a TV series on AppleTV+. It is about a college football coach (Ted) and his co-coach from Kansas who go to England to coach a premier league football (soccer) team. He knows nothing about the game but he is full of enthusiasm and great at team building.

Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn't it? If you're comfortable while you're doing it, you're probably doing it wrong.

The acting is incredible but it is the writing that is spectacular. There is so much good stuff. It makes me laugh out loud which I consider the sign of an outstanding comedy. There is also drama, social commentary, great one-liners and so many quotable moments. The many references to other movies and shows makes me giggle - the players singing So Long, Farewell from Sound of Music - priceless. Don't even get me started on the Rom-Com episode. Over the three seasons, all the characters go through personal growth to become better versions of themselves. Could I do without some of the saltier language? Sure, but then Roy would say hardly anything.

In season 3, episode 8 - We’ll Never Have Paris - there is a storyline where one of the characters' online accounts is hacked and a personal video is stolen and posted on the internet. Obviously, it is something they would not want to share online. In response to this, the team captain tells everyone that they need to delete all the photos off their phones. Nothing is safe on their computers or phones. One team member bemoans having to delete his memories and is told that he can keep his memories just not the photos. Sad eyes and farewells are made as they delete precious photos from their phones.

There is always so much good in the show it frustrated me that they got this so wrong. I was watching season three for a second time when I started telling the TV characters they should get FOREVER accounts. Sure the show is on Apple TV+ (Apple phones and iCloud assumed). They can still have FOREVER accounts! I do. With FOREVER, they could keep the memories as well as the photos and videos. Delete them off the phone so you don’t need to worry about them getting stolen and reposted without your permission.
